How to Plan Your Design Project

It can feel overwhelming when starting a new interior design project, there are many factors to consider that all have a knock-on effect on each other.

This is where an interior designer can be worth their weight in gold, offering their expertise and advice. Read on to see our designer’s top tips on how to effectively plan your design project…

Function

First and foremost, you need to consider how the space will be used. This will have an impact on how you also want the space to look and feel.

Do you need to factor in storage, or multiple seating options? If so, what type and where will these items go? It’s also important to consider existing elements – for example, is there a socket where you plan to put your side table with a lamp?

Having an idea of how you envision the room to be used will enable you to create an effective spatial plan that works for you and your space. The earlier these factors are considered, the easier it is to plan in the necessary works to meet the needs of your plans.

Many designers will offer you a spatial plan as part of their design services, to help you maximise the space you have available and suggest layouts you may not have previously considered.

Ideas and Inspiration

This is our favourite bit of the design process – gathering the ideas and inspiration for your project!

This is the time to collate all your ideas and start to pick out key elements you are drawn to in order to inform your overall design. Look at key colours, textures and materials as a starting point and work outwards from here to create a cohesive mood board for you to work from.

If you don’t have a clear idea in mind or need some support in your decisions, an interior designer can help define your likes and dislikes to give you a clear vision of the concept for your space.

Budget

While every project has a rough budget, it’s very easy to go overboard with your spending and blow this budget completely out of the water. It can also be tricky knowing where to prioritise the larger portions of your budget to get the most from it.

Larger pieces of furniture such as your bed and sofa should be a priority, as these pieces will see the most use and therefore need to be more durable. Planning your budget for each piece or room, before you start purchasing your items will ensure you have a clear guide to stick to.
