The Most Common Interior Design Mistakes

Ever started your own interior design project and immediately regretted it?

Part of our job as interior designers is to stop expensive mistakes before they happen, so we’ve curated a blog post on the most common design faux pas that we see a LOT.

Hopefully this will help you ensure that design regret is a thing of the past!

  1. Not Having a Clear Plan

The first and most common mistake is people rushing into a design project without a proper plan or vision of how they want the space to look.

People will often start buying accessories or furniture before they have a defined vision, meaning the end result can end up looking mis-matched and not cohesive.

A great starting point for any design is a mood board - collate a series of images that you like and pick out key colours, styles and materials for your design that you should follow. All of your purchases should incorporate one of these elements to tie the space together.

2. Neglecting Scale and Proportion

2. Neglecting Scale and Proportion

Scale is so important in design. It’s crucial to picture your room as a whole and understand how the furniture and accessories will work and look together.

For example, two huge bedside tables next to a small double bed will throw the whole space off and look completely wrong together. Make sure your pieces are appropriately scaled to fit the space - a floor plan can help with this to ensure everything fits!

3. Being Too ‘Matchy’

While having a co-ordinating colours, materials and patterns is important to ensure flow and cohesion between rooms, equally you can go too far the opposite way.

Making everything too similar or match exactly will result in a flat finish and a lack of visual interest. Instead, try mixing and matching colours within the same palette, patterns that speak the same language or materials that compliment each other to add depth and personality to your space.

4. Forgetting About a Focal Point

Every room should have a focal poin - whether it’s an existing feature, such as a fireplace, or your own addition, such as a feature wall. Adding a focal point to your room allows a place for the eye to rest. It could be a piece of art, striking piece of furniture or even a rug.

Neglecting to add a focal point to your space is a common interior design mistake to make and can leave your room feeling chaotic and directionless.

5. Cluttering the Space

Less is often more when it comes to interior design.

Too much clutter can make your space feel cramped and chaotic - and is an easy design mistake to make. Instead, try streamlining your decor and have a regular declutter to maintain a tidy and organised environment.

One of our top tips if you’re unsure is to just start with the basic pieces in your space then slowly add your finishing touches bit by bit, instead of adding in a pile of accessories all at once.

6. Not Adding Your Own Touch

Your home should always reflect your own personality and style. While tapping into trends is a great way to keep your space feeling fresh and modern, it’s important to keep it true to you!

Avoid the common interior design mistake of creating a space that looks like a showroom straight out of a catalogue.

Instead, try to incorporate personal touches and things that you love - such as family photos, artwork, and other tokens that make your space feel like yours.

In the world of interior design, mistakes are usually a part of the learning process. However, being aware of these common pitfalls can help you make more informed decisions and create an interior you love.
